One New South Indian Film Every Week on Netflix
Netflix is expanding its investment in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, with the platform planning to release an average of one new film from South India every week through the remainder of 2026.
The strategy brings together theatrical blockbusters, smaller story-driven films and Netflix Originals rather than focusing on a single type of content.
Netflix says its goal is to go deeper into culturally authentic stories with strong local flavours while ensuring that the themes and storytelling remain accessible to audiences beyond their original markets.
The platform is also experimenting across genres, themes, formats and creative voices as its catalogue of South Indian films and series continues to expand.
Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Streaming from 21 August
One of the immediate additions to the lineup is Pyaar Prema Kalyanam, which premieres on Netflix on 21 August 2026.
The Tamil film explores what happens to love and relationships after marriage, with its story beginning when a bride refuses to leave her family home following her wedding and her husband is forced to consider whether he can adjust to living with his in-laws.
The film forms part of Netflix’s expanded South Indian release strategy for the second half of the year.
Peddi, OM – Chapter 1: Udhiram, Ranabaali and The Paradise
Netflix’s lineup also includes several major theatrical films featuring prominent South Indian stars.
Ram Charan’s Peddi is among the recently released titles in the slate. Upcoming theatrical films that will subsequently form part of Netflix’s offering include Dhanush’s OM – Chapter 1: Udhiram, Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali and Nani’s Paradise.

The lineup gives Netflix a combination of established theatrical properties and projects featuring some of the biggest stars in Tamil and Telugu cinema.
Made in Korea Reached Netflix Top 10 in 54 Countries
Netflix highlighted the international performance of its South Indian titles while announcing the expanded slate.
Made in Korea became the first South Indian title to reach No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Non-English Films list. The film also entered the Top 10 in 54 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa.
Following the film’s international reception, lead actress Priyanka Mohan was appointed Honorary Ambassador for Korea Tourism.
Netflix cited this as an example of South Indian stories moving beyond their original markets and creating wider cultural connections.
Other films highlighted from the first half of 2026 include Youth, With Love, Blast and Bharathanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam.
Netflix Expands South Indian Originals
The expansion is not limited to acquiring streaming rights to theatrical films.
Netflix is also increasing its slate of Original films and series produced for South Indian audiences.
Original films including Stephen and Takshakudu are part of this strategy.
On the series front, The Game is Netflix’s first Tamil Original series, while Super Subbu is its first Telugu Original series. Legacy is another series included in the expanding lineup.
The strategy combines these Originals with licensed theatrical films, giving the platform a broader catalogue across different formats.
Monika Shergill on Netflix’s South Indian Strategy
Monika Shergill, Vice President, Content, Netflix India, said the weekly release strategy reflects the depth and variety of programming available across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
According to Shergill, working with both established and emerging talent allows Netflix to offer audiences a broad selection of genres.
She also highlighted the growing international reach of South Indian films, with locally rooted stories increasingly finding audiences around the world.
Mythri Movie Makers on Partnership with Netflix
Naveen Yerneni, Co-Founder of Mythri Movie Makers, highlighted the production company’s experience of working with Netflix on films of different scales.
The partnership began with Pushpa 2, which reached audiences in India as well as international markets through streaming.
Yerneni also cited Dude as an example of a more character-driven film finding an audience on Netflix.
For the production house, this provides room to continue making large-scale Telugu films while also supporting smaller, story-focused projects that can reach audiences beyond their theatrical markets.
AGS Entertainment on Dragon, Blast and Love Today
Archana Kalpathi, Creative Producer at AGS Entertainment, highlighted Netflix’s involvement with several of the company’s Tamil projects.
She cited Dragon as an example of a film that went on to become a top-five box-office success before reaching another audience through Netflix.
Netflix also backed Blast, a female-led Tamil action film, while Love Today demonstrated the continuing audience interest in romantic comedies.
According to AGS Entertainment, partnerships of this kind provide greater scope to support new actors, technicians and creative voices while continuing to prioritise content-oriented cinema.

Netflix also shared data illustrating the increasing presence of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema on the platform.
