What Is Sun NXT Shorts?
Sun NXT Shorts is a short-form drama destination available within the main Sun NXT platform. Users do not need a completely separate entertainment ecosystem to access the new catalogue.
The service combines 150+ titles and originals, international dubbed shorts, popular Sun TV serials and blockbuster movies presented in Shorts format. The focus is on quick, engaging and binge-friendly episodes suited to audiences who prefer shorter viewing sessions.
This also means Sun TV Network can use its existing movie and television catalogue in a different way rather than limiting Sun NXT Shorts entirely to newly produced content.
Malayalam Serials Coming to Sun NXT Shorts
Malayalam is one of the four South Indian languages specifically included in the remastered Shorts catalogue.
The company has confirmed three familiar Malayalam television titles among the content being re-imagined:
| Malayalam Show | Sun NXT Shorts |
|---|---|
| Nandini | Remastered in short format |
| Peythozhiyathe | Remastered in short format |
| Sundari | Remastered in short format |
These programmes will be remastered, resized and re-edited into faster short-form episodes, providing a different viewing experience from watching their conventional television episodes.
Movies and TV Serials Re-Edited Into Short Episodes
The concept is not restricted to television serials.
Sun NXT’s existing library is also being used to transform blockbuster movies into short episodic formats.
Among the examples announced for Tamil audiences are Rajinikanth’s Endhiran, Suriya’s Ayan and Dhanush’s Thiruchitrambalam. Television titles including Ethirneechal, Kayal and Sundari are also being adapted.
Telugu titles highlighted include Nandini, Subha Sankalpam and Sivangi, while Anna Thangi, Janani and Kanyadana are among the Kannada shows included.
Sun NXT Shorts on Mobile and Television
One of the more interesting aspects of the launch is its approach to different screens.
Sun NXT Shorts adjusts the framing depending on the device. Mobile viewers can see tighter close-ups, while television viewers get wider background scenes presented in a 4:3 format.
Sun TV Network describes this as a way of preserving the native experience of short-form entertainment while extending micro-dramas beyond smartphones and onto larger television screens.
Originals and International Dubbed Shorts
Re-edited library content represents only one part of Sun NXT Shorts.
The service also includes exclusive original series and international dubbed shorts, creating a combination of familiar Sun Network programmes and content specifically suited to shorter viewing formats.
According to Sun NXT Head Rakesh CK, the strategy combines the network’s legacy catalogue with fresh originals conceived specifically for the short-form medium.
Sun TV Network Targets Short-Form Entertainment
Sun TV Network sees changing audience viewing habits as an opportunity to expand its regional entertainment business.
Kaviya Maran, Executive Director of Sun TV Network, said audiences are consuming entertainment differently across multiple screens and in shorter sessions. She highlighted the company’s 65,000 hours of existing content as an important asset that can be reformatted for a new generation of viewers.
The Shorts strategy is also designed to serve two different audiences. Existing family viewers get familiar Sun Network content in a new format, while original fast-paced programming is intended to attract younger and Gen Z audiences.
Sun NXT – Movies, Live TV and Entertainment
Sun NXT is the streaming platform owned and operated by Sun TV Network Limited. According to the company, the service currently offers 65,000+ hours of entertainment, more than 4,300 movies and over 44 live television channels.
Its overall catalogue includes movies, television serials, comedy clips, music videos, Shorts, audio launches and trailers across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and English. Selected content also supports technologies including 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital+.
With the introduction of Sun NXT Shorts, the platform is now extending that catalogue into micro-dramas and bite-sized versions of familiar movies and television shows, with Malayalam content forming part of the new short-form entertainment line-up.
