Malayalam cinema is set to welcome a promising new filmmaker as Varsha Vasudev makes her feature film directorial debut with Chinna Chinna Aasai, starring Madhubala and Indrans in the lead roles. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on June 19, with Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films bringing the movie to theatres across Kerala.
Produced by Abhijith Babuji under the banner of Babuji Productions, Chinna Chinna Aasai is Varsha Vasudev’s first feature film after earning widespread appreciation for her acclaimed short film Ente Narayanikku.
The recently released trailer has generated strong audience interest, with viewers praising its emotional tone, beautiful visuals, and heartwarming storytelling.
🎬 A Dream Casting Choice for Varsha Vasudev
Speaking about the film, director Varsha Vasudev revealed that Indrans was always her first choice for the male lead while writing the script.
For the female lead character, Leela, she wanted an actress above the age of 50 with a strong screen presence. Her search naturally led her to the leading actresses of classic Mani Ratnam films from the 1990s.
Varsha said that although she admired all the actresses from that era, Madhubala’s iconic performance in Roja remained her personal favourite. As a result, Madhubala was the first actress she approached for the role of Leela.
🌹 How the Film Got Its Title
According to Varsha Vasudev, the title Chinna Chinna Aasai was finalized only after Madhubala agreed to be part of the project.
The title is inspired by the legendary song from Roja, one of Madhubala’s most memorable films. Interestingly, Madhubala herself reportedly pointed out similarities between her character Leela in Chinna Chinna Aasai and Roja, the character that made her a household name across India.
The film also marks Madhubala’s return to Malayalam cinema with a powerful central character after a considerable gap.
❤️ A Feel-Good Drama Filled with Music and Emotion
The trailer suggests that Chinna Chinna Aasai will be a heartwarming drama that blends romance, emotions, relationships, and music.
Set entirely in Varanasi, the film explores human connections and aspirations through an emotionally rich narrative. The chemistry between Madhubala and Indrans, combined with strong performances from the supporting cast, appears to be one of the film’s major strengths.
The movie has completed censor formalities and has received a clean U certificate, making it suitable for family audiences.
🎵 Music by Govind Vasantha
Another major attraction of the film is its music, composed by acclaimed musician Govind Vasantha.
Songs such as Kathak and Kara Kaviyathe have already gained significant attention among music lovers and have helped build anticipation for the film’s release.
