The trailer release of the film ‘Pennum Porattum’ directed by Rajesh Madhavan has started a big discussion in the Malayalam film world. Many stars of Malayalam cinema including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kunchacko Boban, Fahadh Faasil, Tovino Thomas, Basil Joseph, Manju Warrier, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Sibi Malayil, Ranjith and others have enthusiastically shared the trailer of the film on social media.
The trailer gives an indication that the film, which has a dog named Suttu as the central character and is made with new faces, will be a cinematic experience that has never been seen before in Malayalam. The trailer is filled with a presentation that exudes the scent of rural life by combining action, comedy and emotion. The storyline, which combines fantasy and social satire, puts ‘Pennum Porattum’ forward as a cult film.

One of the most notable elements of the film is that Tovino Thomas voices the dog Suttu. The other characters in the film are ordinary villagers, including agricultural workers and youth. Another special feature of the film is that most of the characters, including in comedy and action, are played by new faces.
The film is being produced by Santosh T. Kuruvilla’s STK Frames, a producer who has introduced innovations in Malayalam cinema with films like Maheshinte Prathikaram, Android Kunjappan, and Nna Than Kes Kodu. The fact that a dog is the protagonist for the first time in a film produced by STK Frames also makes ‘Pennum Porattum’ very different.
Another big news surrounding the film is that NETFLIX has acquired the OTT rights of the film even before its theatrical release. The fact that no Malayalam film has acquired such a global OTT platform before its theatrical release in recent times makes ‘Pennum Porattum’ very notable in the entertainment industry.
STK Frames – Binu George Alexander Productions is a joint venture between Santosh T. Kuruvila, Binu George Alexander and Sherin Rachel Santosh.
Rajesh Madhavan, who started out as a casting director and later gained attention as an actor and hero, is now presenting ‘Pennum Porattum’ as a director, and his previous experiences and accolades at film festivals have fueled expectations about the film. The film also has the distinction of being the only Malayalam film to be screened in the Gala Premiere section in Goa this year.
The story, screenplay and dialogues of the film are written by Ravi Shankar, who is a co-writer of films like ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ and ‘Rani Padmini’ directed by Amal Neerad and starring megastar Mammootty. The trailer makes it clear that the main strengths of the film are the local dialogues and a strong screenplay.
The film is edited by Chaman Chacko, with cinematography by Sabin Uralikandi. Music by Don Vincent. The trailer confirms that ‘Pennum Porattum’, featuring more than four hundred animals and about a hundred new faces, is a different and innovative cinematic experiment. ‘Pennum Porattum’ will be in theaters from February 13.
