From the 1964 Dhanushkodi Disaster to a 2026 Love Story
The makers describe the central idea of Dhanushkodiyilekku through the line “the disaster of 1964 and the love of 2026.”
Around six decades ago, Dhanushkodi was a thriving region at the southern end of India. Located close to Sri Lanka’s Talaimannar, the region had historical importance in trade and connections between India and Sri Lanka.
The area was home to people engaged in different occupations, with fishing serving as an important livelihood. Educational and commercial establishments, a railway station, post office and places of worship were among the facilities that formed part of life in Dhanushkodi.
That world changed dramatically in December 1964, when a devastating cyclone struck the region around the Christmas period and destroyed much of Dhanushkodi.
It is against memories of this historical tragedy that the makers position the contemporary narrative of Dhanushkodiyilekku.
Two Families, Love and Revenge
The 2026 portion of the story revolves around two families from contrasting backgrounds.
While one represents material prosperity, the other is characterised by its attachment to culture and values. Their lives become intertwined through a narrative involving love, rivalry and revenge.
By connecting these relationships with the historical identity of Dhanushkodi, the film aims to combine a family and romantic drama with a setting carrying memories of a major disaster.
Dhanushkodi and the Ram Setu Tradition
Dhanushkodi also occupies an important place in traditional narratives associated with the Ramayana. According to the tradition referenced by the filmmakers, the region is connected with the construction of Ram Setu, associated with Lord Rama’s journey across the sea to Lanka to rescue Sita from Ravana.
Its proximity to Sri Lanka and its historical role in movement and commerce between the two regions also form part of the backdrop presented for the movie.
