In a major announcement that has set Malayalam OTT viewers abuzz, Jio Hotstar has confirmed that director Midhun Manuel Thomas’ upcoming thriller Anali will draw inspiration from one of Kerala’s most sensational crime stories—the Jolly Cyanide case. The project, unveiled at the platform’s grand South Unbound event on Tuesday, has already sparked widespread intrigue, especially with the release of its gripping teaser. The visual hints, tone, and setting strongly evoke memories of the real-life serial murders from Koodathayi, carried out by Jolly Joseph—one of the most shocking criminal cases in the state’s history.
The Jolly Joseph–Koodathayi case remains one of Kerala’s most chilling crime sagas. Between 2002 and 2016, Jolly Joseph allegedly orchestrated the murders of six family members using cyanide, all while maintaining the façade of being a pious, well-respected woman in the community. The victims included her mother-in-law, father-in-law, her husband, and several relatives. For years, the deaths were dismissed as natural or accidental until a determined police probe unraveled the truth, leading to her arrest in 2019. The case shocked Kerala for its cold-blooded planning, domestic setting, and the disturbing double life led by the accused.
While Anali remains a fictional narrative, the thematic parallels to the Koodathayi murders are
unmistakable. Midhun Manuel Thomas—best known for the blockbuster Anjaam Pathiraa, celebrated for redefining Malayalam crime thrillers—returns to the genre with another chilling exploration of human darkness. Known for his sharp writing and character-driven tension, Midhun crafts Anali as a rural mystery set in a remote Kerala village, where unsettling deaths and buried truths begin to surface.
The series stars Leona Lishoy in the lead role, portraying a character drawn from the unsettling
psychological landscape of the notorious real-life case. Leona, who has steadily built a reputation for her nuanced, bold, and emotionally rich performances, steps into one of the most challenging roles of her career. Known for notable works such as Mayanadhi, Varathan, and Khedda, Leona has consistently showcased her ability to embody complex, layered characters. With Anali, she steps into the skin of a

protagonist navigating suspicion, secrets, and eerie moral ambiguity—making her one of the most anticipated casting choices of Jio Hotstar’s lineup. Joining her is Nikhila Vimal, who plays a parallel lead as another woman caught in the storm of unfolding mysteries. Together, their performances anchor what promises to be a taut, atmospheric, and emotionally intense thriller.
Anali was announced alongside two other titles—Secret Stories: ROSLIN and Cousins & Kalyanams. Roslin, starring Meena in her OTT debut, is a psychological drama focusing on a teenage girl and her parents, while Cousins & Kalyanamswill offer a lighter, humorous narrative centred on wedding chaos and family quirks.
With Anali, JioHotstar adds a dark, compelling entry to its 2026 Malayalam slate—one that blends real- life horrors with cinematic storytelling. As viewers draw connections between the fictional narrative and the infamous Jolly case, anticipation continues to build, marking Anali as one of next year’s most awaited Malayalam webseries releases.
