Seattle: Co-hosts USA became the second team after Mexico to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after registering a comfortable 2-0 victory over Australia at Seattle Stadium.
Coming into the match with confidence following their 4-1 win over Paraguay, the United States continued their impressive form and dominated proceedings from the opening whistle. Mauricio Pochettino’s men controlled possession, pressed aggressively, and created several dangerous opportunities in the final third.
USA opened the scoring in the 11th minute when a dangerous cross from Folarin Balogun forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into an own goal. The goal was the seventh own goal recorded at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The hosts doubled their advantage before halftime through Alex Freeman. Although the goal was initially checked for a possible offside, a VAR review confirmed the strike, giving the United States a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.
Australia showed greater urgency after the restart and attempted to fight their way back into the contest. The introductions of Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe added energy to the Socceroos attack, but USA’s defence remained solid throughout the second half.
Balogun continued to trouble the Australian backline with his pace and movement, while Chris Richards and Tyler Adams played key roles in ensuring another clean sheet for the hosts.
With two wins from two matches and no goals conceded so far, USA have emerged as one of the standout teams of the tournament. The victory guarantees their place in the knockout stage, and they will now aim to finish top of Group D when they play their final group-stage fixture.
