Prabhas and Nag Ashwin’s sci-fi blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD has added another milestone to its remarkable journey by winning two honours at the 72nd National Film Awards. The film received the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award, while Nitin Zihani Choudhary was honoured with the Best Production Design award.
Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, Kalki 2898 AD emerged as one of the biggest Indian blockbusters of 2024. The film grossed over ₹1,200 crore worldwide, including more than ₹300 crore from the Hindi box office, making it the highest-grossing Indian film of the year.
Following the announcement, Vyjayanthi Movies expressed gratitude to the audience and the National Film Awards jury for recognizing the film. The production house also shared that the ambitious vision introduced through Kalki 2898 AD will be expanded further in the much-awaited sequel, Kalki 2898 AD Part 2.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film is set in a dystopian future shaped by war, environmental collapse, and ancient prophecies. The story follows Bhairava, played by Prabhas, a powerful warrior whose destiny becomes intertwined with the arrival of Kalki.
The film blends futuristic science fiction with Indian mythology. Amitabh Bachchan portrays the immortal Ashwatthama from the Mahabharata, while Deepika Padukone plays Sumathi, who carries the unborn Kalki. Kamal Haasan appears as the formidable antagonist Supreme Yaskin, determined to stop the prophesied saviour.
The film’s stunning visual world and large-scale production design played a major role in its success, with Nitin Zihani Choudhary’s work now receiving national recognition.

The post-theatrical digital rights were acquired for record amounts, with Amazon Prime Video securing the South Indian language rights and Netflix acquiring the Hindi streaming rights. The film made its digital premiere on 22 August 2024 across the respective platforms.
