Zee News Ltd (ZNL) plans to invest Rs 5 billion in a slew of channels over two years, expanding its presence in regional markets and new segments.
The company is in the process of applying to the information and broadcasting ministry for clearance to operate a Bengali movie channel which is expected to consume Rs 600 million.
The Tamil and Malayalam general entertainment channels (GECs) will require an investment of Rs 1.8 billion while the Telugu news channel will take away Rs 350 million. ZNL is also planning to launch an English business and a global news channel.
Zee has recently obtained approval to move Marathi movie channel Zee Talkies to ZNL. The financials of Zee Talkies, which was earlier residing in Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, will get captured in ZNL from this quarter.
The Tamil GEC is likely to launch in September while the Telugu news channel will come up in October. The Malayalam GEC will make its appearance in the next fiscal.
