Aranazhika Neram  is the dramatization of Parappuram’s   immortal novel of the same name, into a serial framework for broadcast on the mini-screen.

It dominated the Annual State Television Awards  of 2008, almost sweeping the field clean of the  competition by winning an unprecedented 9 awards in the serial category, the 1st tele-serial  to achieve this stupendous feat.

K.E. Mathai, more familiar by his nom de plume Parappuram to his legion  of readers, was  a literary giant who continued the rich lineage of  the Malayalam novel genre established by geniuses like Thakazhi, Basheer, Uroob etc. An amazingly prolific writer, he produced 20 novels and 13 short story collections in his short span of  57 years . Not content with merely walking in the footprints of the virtuosos  who had gone before him, he stamped a trail of his own with stories and characters that  were painted with the earthy tints of  Life. It was because of this close adherence to the Real, that his novels  lent themselves  readily to adaptation to the cinematic medium, with most of his major works being translated into commercially successful ventures.

A timeless work of art that won the Kerala Sahithya Academy  Award, Aranazhika Neram   presents the entire story from the viewpoint of the ailing patriarch of a family , Kunchenachan, who is just hours away from  his end. Through the eyes of the aged protagonist, this thought provoking novel gives impressions and glimpses of the emotional turmoil, the mental anguish of his family members and the their attitudes and approach to the moral codes of those times.

The serial which is a re-interpretation of the original novel, has veteran actor Bharat Murali essaying the central character of Kunchenachan, in a powerful performance that fetched him the State Government’s Best Actor Award. Amrita TV is telecasting it again for discerning audiences across the world  as a tribute to the versatile actor late Murali and also in view of the fact that  Aranazhika Neram was the most celebrated TV adaptation of a classic in recent times.

A television adaptation of the vintage masterpiece that captured its quintessence in 40 classic episodes, Aranazhika Neram  is Murali’s swansong, the last character he gave life to, before life ebbed away from him forever
