Mamukoya Reminiscences On Friends, Career & Life in Amrita TV’s Samagamam
From measuring logs in a lumber yard in Kallayi, to winning the State Award for Best Comedian is a remarkable ascent, one that is well recounting. In this week’s Samagamam telecast Saturday and Sunday at 8.00pm , Mamukoya ransacks his memory for the events that shaped his 3 decades long career as a Mollywood comedian.
Mamukoya started out as a scaler in a timber yard, measuring logs, looking for defects and estimating the quality of the wood. In his spare time he indulged his passion for acting, taking up roles in amateur drama troupes. He got his 1st chance in Anyarude Bhoomi that sank without even a ripple. After a wait of 5 years he got another role on the recommendation of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer with whom he was close, as a servant in a stable.
Luck happened by chance when he was working as location manager for Sibi Malayil’s Doore Doore Oru Koodu Koottam. Pappu was supposed to be the comedian, but at the last moment the Producer who had some issues with Pappu, insisted that he be dropped and Maukoya got his opening. The role of an Arab Munshi was miniscule consisting of just a scene, but Koya performed so well in the take that Sreenivasan who was the script writer enlarged and elaborating on it that it became a notable role. The film sealed his fate for good and the buck toothed Koya with his trademark Mappila accent became a permanent fixture in films from then. ….
