Ente Vartha

Amrita TV’s journalism based programme Ente Vartha, that introduced the novel new concept of Citizen Journalism not just to Malayalam television but to the entire Kerala media scene, has just completed 200 episodes of riveting reports and given away Rs 25 million as aid to the destitute in two years. The show that underlined the news sense, reporting skills and moral responsibilities of a group of ordinary citizens who filed raw, unalloyed information on a rainbow spectrum of issues, problems and controversies across the State , is telecast on Amrita TV every Sunday at 10.30 pm.

Citizen Journalists are members of the general public employed in diverse professions who, impelled by ethical fervor report on instances of corruption, injustice or wrongdoing in their immediate neighbourhood. They possess an insatiable curiosity, a determination to follow leads, in fact have all the qualities of an ideal newshound, but are not members of the Fourth Estate estate nor have any grounding in professional journalism. Ente Vartha has created around 400 Citizens journalists in every nook and corner of Kerala, who have contributed more than 600 breaking news, front page accounts. They ferret out topical news that have not been caught in the searchlight of the mainstream media and bring it to the attention of the public and the notice of the officialdom.

Two years ago, Ente Vartha upgraded its status, changing its role from reporting news to a redressal of grievances. The topical stories documented by the untrained pressmen threw up countless cases of patients in dire medical emergencies, students whose studies were stalled, children rendered homeless by sudden tragedies, all of which called for urgent financial assistance. Touched by the graphic accounts aired in Ente Vartha episodes, donations poured in generously from all quarters, as viewers dug deep into their pockets to help out fellow citizens.

Six- year old Bangalore resident Nerbanu was born a deaf mute. When her parents found that the congenital condition could be corrected with a cochlear implant, they were overjoyed but the jubilation quickly evaporated when the doctors totaled up the bill for the surgery- it came up to Rs 8 lakhs, an amount too big for their slender purse. In the end they approached Ente Vartha with their predicament. The benevolence of Ente Vartha’s viewers re-wrote the script of her life, as today Nerbanu can speak and hear effortlessly.
Anoop from Pathanpuram was pillion riding on a friend’s bike on the way to a wedding when it crashed into a truck. Completely paralysed, he was bedridden for 2 years. Constantly praying for death’s ‘release’ from his condition, he finally decided to write to Ente Vartha for monetary assistance. It came spontaneously and profusely. Now thanks to better medical treatment, he is back on his legs.

As Ente Vartha steps up from passive coverage into pro-active mode, the show has acquired muscle, transforming from a show that chronicled incidents to one that can disburse aid and ensure remedial action. But long before it had acquired this new dimension, Ente Vartha -‘My News’ of a bunch of amateur scribes reporting provincial stories from their neck of woods , had been taken to heart by the viewing public of Kerala as ‘Our News’.

Amrita Outstanding Contribution Awards 2013

The ”Amrita Awards for Outstanding Contribution 2013″, instituted by Amrita TV  to recognize exemplary achievers in different arenas of endeavour were conferred on E.Sreedharan, Kapil Dev, V V S Laxman and Abhilash Tomy.The Awards were given away at a public event by Prof K.V.Thomas,Union Minister  on 20 April 2013 at Cochin.

At the glittering ceremony held along with the Amrita Film Awards, attended by a galaxy of film stars and eminent people from all walks of life, Mr Sreedharan whose pathbreaking engineeering marvels changed the lives of people across India,  announced that he would be donating the Prize amount of Rs 5 Lakhs for charity. Kapil Dev expressed his gratitude to Amrita TV for  the award, remarking that he prided in playing for the country and that ‘he loved Keralites who were very simple; he loved Kerala food even better’. VVS Laxman was thrilled to be sharing the dais with Kapil Dev ‘his childhood hero’, and remembered his days with the erstwhile IPL Team,Kochi Tuskers .

Abhilash Tomy said that while thousands of adventurers have climbed the Everest or gone to space, only 79 persons have undertaken a solo voyage across the oceans–and that he couldnt fathom  from where he gathered the confidence and fearlessness to undertake the voyage.

The “Amrita Awards for Outstanding Contribution 2013″, instituted by Amrita TV  to recognize exemplary achievers in different arenas of endeavour, have been announced.

Leading film personalities and technicians will receive Awards in over 25 categories. Stars from Kerala and other States are attending the Amrita Film Awards, which comprises a wonderful entertainment Program by performers from Mumbai ,Chennai and Kerala.

In the Film awards category, ‘Ayalum Njanum Thammil’, a telling portrayal of the medical profession shown in all its starkness has bagged the Best Film Award ;its Director Lal Jose who wielded the megaphone for the same as well as the light entertainer ‘Diamond Necklace’ has been selected as the Best Director.

Mohanlal who essayed the role of an alcoholic to perfection in Renjith’s satirical ‘Spirit is the Best Actor while Kavya Madhavan’s riveting performance as a sweet naïve housewife in ‘Bayuttiyude Namathil’ has been the unanimous choice for Best Actress. Biju Menon, took home the Best Supporting Actor accolade for his comic capers in ‘Mayamohini’ and well measured acting in ‘Ordinary’ as Lena deservedly walks away as Best Supporting Actress in ‘Ee Adutha Kalathu’. Pratap Pothan who returns to Malayalam as a ruthless rapist in ‘22 Female Kottayam’ is the Best Villain of the Year. ‘Spirit’s’ music has brought laurels to all those related to it : Rafeeq Ahammed who penned its lyrics is the Best Lyricist, Shahabaz Aman who composed its music becomes the Best Music Director and Vijay Yesudas who sang a couple of the numbers is the Best Male Singer. Remya Nambeesan’s husky crooning for ‘Ivan Megharoopan’ and ‘Bachelor Party’ has been voted the Best Female Singer .

For his decades long contribution to the Malayalam Film Industry as director, script writer and lyricist, Sreekumaran Thampi has been bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Bobby & Sanjay the brother duo whose tight storyline in ‘Ayalum Njanum Thammil’ has jointly been adjudged as Best Script Writers; Vinod Illampally picks up the Award for Best Cinematography for the exquisite camera work of ‘Chattakkari & Grand Master ‘and for his first rate fine tuning of ‘Ee Aduthakalathu’, Arun Kumar is the Best Editor.

The youth brigade has cornered its share of award too: Fahad Fazil who vaulted to fame with a series of good films is the Youth Icon of the Year; Navin Pauly and Isha Talwar the love lorn couple of Thattathin Marayathu are the Best Youth Pair; Dulquar Salman who shot to fame with just 2 films is the Best New Face of the Year(Male) and Namita Pramod, the child actress who blossomed into heroine is the Best New face (Female) of the year.
